Which Oldham and Rochdale postcodes are in the van zone?
Our van zone is a 10 mile circle drawn in a straight line from our unit in Cheetham Hill. Oldham is comfortably inside it. Rochdale sits right on the edge, which is why we list each postcode district separately instead of saying "Rochdale" as a whole.
| Area | Postcode | Straight-line distance | Delivery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Middleton | M24 | About 4.3 miles | Van zone |
| Chadderton | OL9 | About 5.1 miles | Van zone |
| Oldham town centre | OL1 | About 6.8 miles | Van zone |
| Ashton-under-Lyne | OL6 | About 6.5 miles | Van zone |
| Rochdale | OL11 | About 8.1 miles | Van zone |
| Rochdale | OL16 | About 9.3 miles | Van zone |
| Rochdale | OL12 | About 10.3 miles | Courier |
| Rochdale | OL15 | About 11.9 miles | Courier |
Two points are worth keeping in mind. First, the distance is measured in a straight line, so the drive is longer. Second, a postcode district covers an area, and a site at the far edge of an in-zone district may be close to the line. If your factory or unit is near the boundary, check the exact postcode before you plan around a same-day van.
We would rather tell you up front that a site is outside the zone than promise a van that cannot come. If you are unsure, call us with the full postcode and we will confirm whether the van can reach you, and if not, which courier option gets the stock there fastest.
If you are outside the zone, nothing else changes. Courier orders placed by 2pm Monday to Friday leave our unit the same working day, Royal Mail Tracked 48 is free on every order with no minimum, and Express, DPD Next Day and DPD Saturday are paid options at checkout.
How do you choose protective packaging for manufactured goods?
Start with what can damage the product, then pick the material that stops it. Most damage in transit comes from three things: impact when a parcel is dropped, crushing when cartons are stacked, and movement inside the box.
| Risk | What stops it | Product |
|---|---|---|
| Impact and drops | Cushioning around the item | Large bubble wrap or honeycomb paper |
| Crushing in a stack | A stiffer outer box | Double wall cardboard boxes |
| Movement inside the box | Void fill in every gap | Scrunched bubble wrap or expanded honeycomb paper |
| Rough handling | Clear instructions on the outside | Fragile and Caution Heavy labels |
| Loose parts and bundles | Film that holds items together | Mini Handy Pallet Wrap |
Run a simple test on any new product: pack it the way you plan to ship it, close the box and shake it. If you can feel or hear anything move, add more fill. Then press down firmly on the top corners of a spare packed box to see how the outer copes with weight. For more on fragile goods, our guide to dispatching fragile items safely sets out the steps.
It also pays to count the cost of damage alongside the cost of packaging. A broken part means a replacement, a second delivery, time on the phone and sometimes a lost customer. Spending a little more on wrap and a stronger box for the products that break most often is usually cheaper than handling the returns. Keep a simple log of damage reports by product, and review the packing spec for any line that shows up more than once.
Think about the whole journey too. A carton that goes straight from your unit to a customer on a single van run needs less protection than one that passes through a courier hub, gets sorted on a conveyor and travels on two or three vehicles.
Bubble wrap or honeycomb paper?
Large bubble wrap for Oldham and Rochdale manufacturers has 25mm bubbles. It cushions bulky or heavy items such as machined parts, castings, fixtures and fittings, and it doubles as void fill when you scrunch it into gaps. Each bubble wrap roll is 50m long, in 300mm or 500mm widths. The 300mm suits smaller parts, and the 500mm suits larger items.
Honeycomb Paper Rolls are 80gsm paper that opens into a honeycomb pattern when you stretch it. It grips the item and cushions it, and it is often used for bottles, glass, cosmetics and finished goods. Rolls are 250m long in 500mm or 395mm widths. Some customers ask for paper instead of plastic inside their deliveries, and honeycomb paper lets you offer that.
How much cushioning is enough depends on weight and fragility. A light plastic part may need one layer. A heavy glass or ceramic component needs several layers plus fill on every side, so it cannot touch the box wall. A useful habit is to write the packing spec for each product on a card at the bench: box size, wrap, number of layers and fill. New staff then pack it the same way every time, and you can work out exactly how much material each order uses.
Many manufacturers keep both. Bubble wrap goes on heavy or oddly shaped parts, and honeycomb paper goes on finished retail products. Our guide comparing honeycomb paper vs bubble wrap covers the pros and cons in more detail. The rest of our cushioning and void fill is in the protective packaging collection.
Double walled cardboard boxes for heavier goods
A single wall box is fine for light parcels, but manufactured goods are often dense and heavy, and they get stacked on pallets. Double walled cardboard boxes have two layers of fluting, so the board is stiffer, resists crushing and holds its shape at the bottom of a stack.
Our Double Wall Cardboard Boxes run from 9 x 6 x 6" (229 x 152 x 152mm) up to 24 x 24 x 24" (610 x 610 x 610mm). They come flat, so they take little space until you build them, and the price per box falls as you order more. Choose a size that leaves room for cushioning on every side of the item, rather than one that fits it exactly.
Double walled cardboard boxes are also the better choice when goods go into storage before dispatch. A box that will sit in racking for weeks, or at the bottom of a stack in a cold unit, needs board that keeps its strength. Write the contents and date on the box end so stock can be rotated without opening it.
Standardising on a handful of sizes pays off on a production site. If most products can share three or four box sizes, the stock is easier to count, the pallets stack more evenly and the van order becomes a simple repeat. Measure your best-selling products, group them by the box they fit, and see how few sizes you can get away with. The full range is in the boxes collection.
Tape heavy boxes properly. Run a strip of tape along the centre seam on both the top and bottom, then add strips across the ends. For the heaviest cartons, an H-pattern on the base stops the flaps from opening under load.
Warning labels and stretch film for the dispatch area
Warning Labels tell handlers how to treat a carton at a glance. The Fragile label is 89 x 32mm with 1000 on a roll, and the Caution Heavy label is 148 x 50mm with 500 on a roll, so it stands out on big boxes. Put a label on at least two sides, so it can be seen however the box is stacked.
Best for marking fragile or heavy cartons
Warning Labels
Self-adhesive Fragile and Caution Heavy labels on rolls, so handlers know how to treat the box.
- Fragile 89 x 32mm, 1000 per roll
- Caution Heavy 148 x 50mm, 500 per roll
- Peel and press

Choose sizeView productMini Handy Pallet Wrap is a narrow 100mm roll of 17 micron stretch film, 150m long, in clear or black. Use it to bundle lengths of material, hold two or three small cartons together, or wrap a part so loose pieces stay put. It fits the HW38 handy wrap dispenser, or you can use it by hand. For full pallets, our clear and black 400mm and 500mm rolls are in the pallet wrap collection.
Best for bundling parts and small cartons
Mini Handy Pallet Wrap 100mm x 150m
Narrow 17 micron stretch film for bundling lengths, holding small boxes together and wrapping parts.
- 100mm x 150m per roll
- Clear or black
- Fits the HW38 handy wrap dispenser
From £2.50 ex VAT (£3.00 inc VAT)
Choose sizeView productWhen finished goods leave your site on a pallet, clear pallet wrap holds the load together and lets the driver and the customer read the labels through the film. Rolls come 400mm wide in 120m, 200m and 250m lengths, plus a 500mm x 250m roll, in 20 or 23 micron. The 400mm x 250m roll has an extended core, so you can hold it in your hands and walk round the pallet without a dispenser. Start at the base, tie the film to a corner and work upwards, overlapping each turn. Our guide to warehouse packaging supplies compares every clear and black roll in a table.
Best for wrapping finished pallets for dispatch

Manufacturers tend to buy industrial packaging supplies in larger amounts than shops do: bundles of boxes, a dozen rolls of bubble wrap, or a mixed pallet. Inside the 10 mile zone, bulk and pallet orders go by van, the same as smaller orders. Orders placed by 12pm Monday to Friday can go the same day, and the vans do not run at weekends or on bank holidays.
To get a price, send us the product list, sizes and quantities, the site address and any loading details, such as whether there is a forklift on site. Call 0161 706 1246 or email sales@packsolution.co.uk. For help building a larger order, read our guide to bulk and pallet packaging orders in Manchester.
Plan regular orders around your production schedule. If you know a large batch is due to ship on a Thursday, order the packaging by 12pm on the Tuesday or Wednesday so it is on site with time to spare. A standing weekly or fortnightly order, placed on the same day each time, takes the guesswork out of it and means nobody on the floor has to notice the last roll running out.
As a protective packaging supplier based in Cheetham Hill, we keep stock on the shelf, so a regular order can be repeated without waiting for a production run. If you are comparing options for protective packaging Manchester firms use, our overview of packaging supplies in Manchester lists the full range.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you deliver protective packaging to Oldham by van?
Yes. Chadderton (OL9) is about 5.1 miles and Oldham town centre (OL1) about 6.8 miles from our unit in Cheetham Hill, inside our 10 mile van zone. Van orders placed by 12pm Monday to Friday arrive the same day, and later orders the next working day.
Is Rochdale inside your van delivery zone?
Partly. Rochdale OL16 (about 9.3 miles) and OL11 (about 8.1 miles) are inside the 10 mile zone. OL12 (about 10.3 miles) and OL15 (about 11.9 miles) are outside it, so orders there go by courier. Royal Mail Tracked 48 is free on every order.
Can you deliver a pallet of packaging to a factory in Oldham or Rochdale?
Yes, if the site is inside the 10 mile zone. Bulk and pallet orders go by van, and van delivery is free on qualifying orders. Call 0161 706 1246 with the product list and quantities, and tell us about any loading arrangements at your site.
Which is better for manufactured parts, bubble wrap or honeycomb paper?
Large bubble wrap, with 25mm bubbles, suits bulky and heavy parts and works as void fill. Honeycomb paper suits bottles, glass and finished goods where you want paper instead of plastic. Many manufacturers keep both and use them for different product lines.
When should I use double wall boxes instead of single wall?
Use double walled cardboard boxes for heavy goods, fragile or high-value items and cartons that will sit at the bottom of a pallet stack. The two layers of fluting make the box stiffer and better at resisting crushing.
How do I check whether my postcode is in the van zone?
Use the postcode checker on our local delivery page, or call 0161 706 1246. The zone is 10 miles in a straight line from M8 8HF, so road distance can be longer. Addresses close to the edge are worth checking before you plan around a same-day van.
