Packaging Suppliers Delivering to Bury and Bolton: Where the Van Zone Ends

Packaging suppliers that deliver to Bury and Bolton by van usually work to a set radius, and for our own vans the honest answer is that it depends on the postcode. Pack Solution runs 3 vans from Unit 2, 50 Derby Street, Cheetham Hill, Manchester M8 8HF, and the van zone is 10 miles in a straight line from that address. Bury (BL9) is about 6.9 miles away and inside the zone. Bolton BL2 and BL3 are about 8.9 to 9.1 miles away and also inside. Bolton town centre (BL1) is about 10.5 miles away and outside, so orders there go by courier.

This guide sets out exactly where the line falls across Bury, Tottington, Whitefield, Radcliffe, Farnworth and Bolton, what each option costs and how long it takes, and what to stock if you run a shop, workshop or online business in the area.

Key facts for Bury and Bolton deliveries

  • Our van zone is 10 miles in a straight line from M8 8HF.
  • Inside the zone: Prestwich (M25, about 2.6 miles), Whitefield (M45, about 4.1 miles), Radcliffe, Tottington (BL8), Bury (BL9, about 6.9 miles), Farnworth (BL4, about 7.4 miles) and Bolton BL2 and BL3 (about 8.9 to 9.1 miles).
  • Outside the zone: Bolton town centre (BL1, about 10.5 miles). Orders there go by courier.
  • Van orders placed by 12pm Monday to Friday are delivered the same day. Later orders go the next working day. No vans run at weekends or on bank holidays.
  • Free local van delivery on qualifying orders. Call 0161 706 1246 or WhatsApp +44 7466 559897 to check your order.
  • Courier orders placed by 2pm Monday to Friday leave the same working day, and Royal Mail Tracked 48 is free on every order with no minimum.

Where exactly does the van zone end in Bury and Bolton?

The zone is a circle, not a list of towns, so it cuts through Bolton rather than around it. Everything on the Manchester side of Bury is well inside. Bolton is split: the eastern and southern districts are in, and the town centre is just out.

Area Postcode Straight-line distance How it is delivered
Prestwich M25 About 2.6 miles Van zone
Whitefield M45 About 4.1 miles Van zone
Radcliffe M26 Inside 10 miles Van zone
Bury BL9 About 6.9 miles Van zone
Tottington BL8 Inside 10 miles Van zone
Farnworth BL4 About 7.4 miles Van zone
Bolton BL2 and BL3 About 8.9 to 9.1 miles Van zone
Bolton town centre BL1 About 10.5 miles Courier

Check your postcode for same-day van delivery

Two things are worth knowing about these figures. They are straight-line distances, so the drive is longer. And a postcode district covers a wide area, so a business near the edge of BL2 or BL3 may sit very close to the line. If you are in Bolton, check your full postcode before you plan around a same-day van. We would rather tell you up front that you are outside the zone than promise a van we cannot send.

Bury itself is straightforward. BL9 sits about 6.9 miles away, so the whole of Bury town centre and the surrounding streets are well inside the line, as are Tottington to the north west, Radcliffe to the south west and Whitefield and Prestwich closer to Manchester. Farnworth (BL4) is about 7.4 miles away and also comfortably inside. It is only as you move into central and western Bolton that addresses reach the edge.

Bolton BL1 is outside the van zone. Businesses in Bolton town centre still get courier dispatch the same working day on orders placed by 2pm, and Royal Mail Tracked 48 is free on every order.

Van, courier or collection: which suits your business?

Every business in the area has the same three options. Which one fits depends on where you are, how urgent the order is and how much you are buying.

Option Who can use it Timing Cost
Our van Bury, Tottington, Whitefield, Radcliffe, Farnworth, Bolton BL2 and BL3 Same day if ordered by 12pm, Monday to Friday; otherwise next working day Free on qualifying orders; call or WhatsApp to check
Royal Mail Tracked 48 Everyone, including Bolton BL1 Dispatched the same working day if ordered by 2pm, Monday to Friday Free, no minimum
Express, DPD Next Day, DPD Saturday Everyone Dispatched the same working day if ordered by 2pm, Monday to Friday Paid options at checkout

Keep the two cut-offs separate. 12pm is the van cut-off for same-day delivery. 2pm is the courier cut-off for same-day dispatch. A Bury shop that orders at 1pm misses the same-day van but can still have a courier parcel leave our unit that afternoon.

The van suits urgent orders and bulky ones. A bundle of large boxes or several rolls of wrap is awkward to post but simple to drop off. Bulk and pallet orders go by van inside the zone too. For regular restocks that you can plan a few days ahead, the free Tracked 48 service is usually all you need.

For businesses in Bolton BL1, the courier is the everyday route. Because Tracked 48 is free with no minimum, a small top-up costs nothing to deliver, and the paid next-day services are there when something is urgent. If an order is large and you would like it to come by van, you can also collect from Cheetham Hill, or arrange to receive it at an in-zone address such as a second site in BL2 or BL3.

Collection makes sense if you or a member of staff is already heading into Manchester. Our unit is in Cheetham Hill, and orders are usually ready within 2 hours. We are open Monday to Friday 9:30am to 6pm and Sunday 10am to 5pm, and closed on Saturday.

What should you look for in packaging suppliers near Bury and Bolton?

Price per item matters, but it is only part of the cost. When you compare packaging suppliers for a shop or online business, look at these points as well.

  • Stock on the shelf. A packaging supplier that holds stock can send an order the same day. One that orders in from a manufacturer may take a week or more.
  • Clear cut-offs. You should know exactly what time to order by for same-day delivery or dispatch.
  • Honest delivery areas. A supplier should tell you plainly whether your postcode is covered, rather than leaving you to find out when the van does not arrive.
  • Small minimums. Being able to buy five boxes of a size, or one pack of bags, lets you try sizes before committing.
  • VAT invoices and volume pricing. Prices on our site are shown ex VAT, VAT invoices are available, and many products have volume pricing.

A local packaging supplies store with its own vans gives you more choice than an online-only seller of packaging supplies UK-wide, because you can use the van when you are in a hurry and the free courier when you are not. Our guide to packaging supplies near me in Greater Manchester covers the wider area, and our overview of packaging supplies in Manchester lists the full range.

What should a Bury or Bolton business keep in stock?

Most shops and online sellers in the area need the same short list. Keep two to four weeks of the items you use daily, and less of the rest.

Boxes. Single Wall Cardboard Boxes run from 5 x 5 x 5" (127 x 127 x 127mm) to 24 x 18 x 18" (610 x 457 x 457mm), sold per box with a minimum of 5 per size. The 17.7 x 13.7 x 6" (450 x 350 x 160mm) box is the Royal Mail Small Parcel maximum size, which many online sellers use as their largest standard box. The full range of cardboard boxes for Bury and Bolton is in the boxes collection.

Heavy duty boxes. For heavy goods, fragile stock or cartons that get stacked, double wall cardboard boxes have two layers of fluting and resist crushing far better than single wall. Sizes run from 9 x 6 x 6" (229 x 152 x 152mm) up to 24 x 24 x 24" (610 x 610 x 610mm), supplied flat, and the price per box falls as you buy more. A workshop sending tools or parts, or a shop delivering stock to customers' homes, will usually want a few of these alongside single wall boxes.

Tape. Clear Packing Tape comes in packs of 6 rolls in 24mm, 48mm and 72mm widths. The standard rolls are 42 micron acrylic on polypropylene, and the BigTape 48mm x 150m roll is a low noise option for shared work areas. The full range is in the tapes collection.

Labels. If you print courier labels every day, Fanfold Thermal Labels 4 x 6" come in a folded stack of 1000, so you reload less often than with small rolls. They feed into 4 x 6 inch direct thermal printers, which need no ink or ribbon.

How should you pack parcels so they arrive in one piece?

Good packaging only works if it is used well. A few habits make a real difference to how many parcels arrive damaged, and they cost nothing.

  1. Pick the smallest box that leaves room for protection. Allow a little space on every side for wrapping or fill. A box that is far too big lets the item move, and a box that is too tight passes every knock straight through.
  2. Fill every gap. Close the box and shake it gently. If anything moves, add paper or bubble wrap until it stops.
  3. Seal the seams properly. Run tape along the centre seam on the top and bottom, then add a short strip over each end. For heavy boxes, tape the base in an H pattern.
  4. Use the right bag size. A mailing bag should close flat over the item with the seal strip lying smoothly, not stretched or folded over.
  5. Put the label on the largest flat face. Keep it clear of seams and tape joins so it scans first time.

Writing these steps on a card at the packing bench helps anyone who covers for you on a busy day pack the same way you do.

Planning orders around the van and courier cut-offs

A little planning means you will rarely need to pay for urgent delivery. Pick one day a week to check stock, and place your regular order that morning. If you are in the van zone, an order placed by 12pm arrives the same day. If you are in Bolton BL1, a 2pm order leaves by courier the same day.

Watch out for weekends and bank holidays. A Friday afternoon van order arrives on Monday, and a bank holiday Monday pushes it to Tuesday. If you trade on Saturdays, for example on a market stall, order by 12pm on Thursday for the van, or earlier in the week for the courier.

For busy periods, order ahead. Christmas, Black Friday and seasonal sales all raise the number of parcels you send, and a week's extra stock costs far less than a lost day of dispatch. Our guide to same-day packaging delivery in Manchester sets out every cut-off in one place.

Manufacturers and workshops in Bury and Radcliffe who need cushioning and heavy duty boxes can find more detail in our guide to protective packaging for manufacturers, which covers bubble wrap, honeycomb paper and double wall cartons.
