Christmas cellophane bags turn a handful of sweets or a small present into something that looks like a gift. They are clear, glossy bags you fill, tie with ribbon and hand over or post. Pack Solution sells them as plain Transparent OPP Bags in 10 sizes, along with the boxes and bubble pouches that get bagged gifts through the post.
Two things we do not sell: printed Christmas cello bags, and bags with food-contact certification. Our bags are plain clear OPP, sold as retail and display packaging, and the product page makes no food-contact claim.

What Christmas Cello Bags Are
Christmas cello bags are clear bags used to present small gifts. Ours are made from OPP film, which many shops sell under the cello or cellophane name.
You will see OPP bags listed as clear cello bags or clear cellophane bags, and the look is the same: a glossy, transparent bag that shows what is inside. Transparent OPP Bags are oriented polypropylene with a high clarity finish, so the gift is easy to see and stays clean and free of dust.
Plain clear bags are also more flexible than printed ones. A festive sticker or a red ribbon makes them xmas cellophane bags for December. Take the decoration off and the same bags work for birthday treats, craft fair stock or packing cards and prints through the rest of the year. Our guide to cellophane and cello bags covers the wider range of uses.
Choosing Sizes for Sweets, Gifts and Hamper Items
Choose a bag that fits the gift with enough length above it to gather and tie the top, which usually means one size bigger than the gift alone.
The OPP sizes are given as width x length. Width needs to clear the gift, and length needs to clear the gift plus a few centimetres for the tie.
| Use | OPP bag size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Small treats and wrapped sweets | 6.5 x 9" (165 x 230mm) | The smallest size; also takes an A5 card flat |
| Biscuits in their own packaging, small gift sets | 8 x 10" (203 x 254mm) | Room to gather the top |
| Prints, calendars, flat gifts | 9 x 12" (228 x 305mm) | An A4 sheet (210 x 297mm) lies flat inside |
| Boxed gifts, small hamper items | 10 x 12" to 12 x 16" (254 x 305mm to 305 x 405mm) | Suits bottles of bath products and boxed sets |
| Large gifts and grouped items | 14 x 17" to 18 x 22" (355 x 432mm to 458 x 560mm) | The largest sizes in the range |
Small Cellophane Bags for Sweets
The smallest bag we stock is 6.5 x 9". If you want very small cellophane bags for sweets, such as a bag for three or four sweets, we do not stock bags that small. Fill the 6.5 x 9" bag partway and gather it lower, which gives a fuller, rounder shape and leaves a longer tail for the ribbon.
Christmas Cellophane Bags Large Enough for Hampers
For bigger items, clear cellophane bags large enough for a hamper start at 12 x 15" (305 x 381mm). The 15 x 20" and 18 x 22" sizes take grouped items or a small basket. Anyone after clear cello bags large enough for a whole gift set should measure the set with its base, as a rigid base stops the bag sagging.
Cello Bags for Sweets and Biscuits
Cello bags for sweets work best with individually wrapped sweets, because our bags carry no food-contact claim.
Sweets in cellophane bags make easy gifts for teachers, colleagues and party guests. Wrapped chocolates, boiled sweets and mini bars go straight in. For loose sweets, fudge or home-baked biscuits, put them in their own food packaging first, such as the bag or wrapper they came in, then use the clear bag as the outer layer you tie and decorate.
The same applies to cellophane bags for cookies. Bake sale stalls and gift shops often stack biscuits in a clear bag, but the inner wrap should be one sold for food. The OPP bag then does the presentation job: it shows the biscuits off, keeps the inner wrap clean and gives you somewhere to tie a ribbon and attach a label.
Good to know: if you sell food, check what your local authority or trading standards team expects for labelling and packaging. We cannot advise on food rules, and our bags are not sold as food packaging.
How to Seal and Decorate Xmas Cello Bags
You can seal xmas cello bags with ribbon, tape or a sticker, and the choice depends on whether the gift is handed over or posted.
- Fill the bag, keeping the contents to the lower two thirds.
- Tap the bag on the table so the contents settle and stand upright.
- Gather the top and squeeze out spare air.
- Tie with ribbon, twine or a twist tie, or fold the top over and hold it with tape.
- Add a gift tag, a festive sticker or a sprig of greenery.
- Trim the ribbon ends at an angle so they do not fray.
For gifts handed over in person, a gathered top tied with a bow looks the most festive. For gifts going in the post, fold the top flat and hold it with a strip of clear tape or a sticker, since a bow gets crushed in a box. Festive cellophane bags look best with one or two colours of ribbon used across the whole batch.
A small card inside the bag, facing out, works as a gift label and stops sweets sliding to the front. It also gives you space for your shop name if you sell them.
Posting Gifts in Cellophane Bags
A cellophane bag gives no protection in the post, so a bagged gift needs cushioning and a box around it.
Bubble Pouches are ready-made bags of bubble wrap, open at one end. Slide the bagged gift in, fold the end over and it is cushioned without cutting a roll. BP1 and BP2 suit small sweet bags, and BP3 (180 x 230mm) takes bottles, small electronics and candles.
Then place it in a box. Crash Lock Boxes lock their own base as you open them, so only the top needs closing. CL-A (100 x 100 x 70mm) takes small gifts and samples, and CL-B (160 x 150 x 75mm) or CL-D (220 x 111 x 78mm) suit bigger bags. Die Cut Boxes Brown 070502 fold together without tape and come in packs of 50; ask for the internal dimensions before ordering, as the product page notes.

Using Cello Bags in Christmas Hampers
In a hamper, clear bags group small items together and keep each one clean, so the hamper looks tidy when it is unpacked.
Bag the small things, such as wrapped sweets, soaps or bath products, and leave larger boxed items loose. Xmas cellophane gift bags in matching sizes look neat in rows. A whole hamper can also go inside one of the large OPP bags, gathered and tied at the top, for a classic finish on a gift handed over in person. For christmas cellophane gift bags going inside a posted hamper box, keep the tops folded flat so the lid closes cleanly.
Brown kraft paper lining the hamper base looks good with clear bags on top. The guide to brown paper Christmas wrapping covers that side. If you are choosing between OPP and polythene for other jobs, see OPP bags vs clear polythene bags.
Filling Cello Bags in Batches for a Shop or Stall
When you fill dozens of bags for a shop, a Christmas market or a school fair, set up a simple line so every bag looks the same and the work goes quickly.
Clear a table and lay the stages out from left to right: empty bags, contents, ties, labels, then a box for finished bags. Fill every bag first, then tie them all, then label them all. Doing one step at a time is faster than finishing each bag before starting the next, and the finished bags come out more even.
Count the contents for each bag before you start, and keep one finished bag at the end of the table as the sample everyone matches. If you sell cello bags for cookies or sweets by the bag, an even fill matters, because customers compare bags side by side on a stall.
Store finished bags upright in a box with a little space between them, away from radiators and direct sun. Tied tops crease if bags are packed flat on top of each other, and the clear film shows every fingerprint, so handle them by the tie where you can.
Plan how many bags you need before you order. A pack holds 100 bags in each size, so two sizes in packs of 100 covers a lot of gifts for a small stall. Orders placed by 2pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same working day, and Royal Mail Tracked 48 is free on every order with no minimum.
Keep spare bags and ribbon with the finished stock. A bag that splits or gets marked on the stall can be swapped in a minute, which keeps the display looking full and tidy through a long day.
Christmas Cellophane Bags Checklist
- Pick a bag one size bigger than the gift so the top can be tied.

- Keep contents to the lower two thirds of the bag.
- Tie with ribbon for hand-delivered gifts; fold flat for posted ones.
- Stick to one or two ribbon colours across a batch.
- Cushion bagged gifts in a bubble pouch before boxing.
- Fill gaps in the box so nothing moves.
- Check posting dates with Royal Mail or your courier.
Stocking Clear Bags for Christmas
One or two OPP sizes cover most Christmas gift bagging: the 6.5 x 9" size for sweets and small treats, and a larger size for gift sets and hamper items. Add bubble pouches and a small box size if you post them. The bags and boxes collections have every size mentioned here.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size Christmas cellophane bags do I need for small gifts?
Lay the gift flat and allow room above it to gather and tie the top. Transparent OPP Bags start at 6.5 x 9" (165 x 230mm), which takes an A5 card flat or a small handful of wrapped sweets. The 8 x 10" (203 x 254mm) size suits slightly bigger treats and small gift sets.
Can I put sweets in cellophane bags?
Individually wrapped sweets go straight in. Our Transparent OPP Bags are sold as retail and display packaging, and the product page makes no food-contact claim. For loose sweets or unwrapped biscuits, put them in their own food packaging first, then use the clear bag as the outer presentation layer.
Do you sell printed Christmas cello bags?
No. Pack Solution sells plain, clear OPP bags with no printed designs. Add the Christmas look with ribbon, a festive sticker, a gift tag or a sprig of greenery tied on. Plain bags also carry on into other seasons, so a pack of 100 does not go to waste in January.
How do I seal clear cello bags without a heat sealer?
Gather the top of the bag and tie it with ribbon or twine, twist it and use a twist tie, or fold the top over once or twice and hold it with a strip of clear tape or a sticker. A folded top with a sticker gives the flattest finish for posting.
Are clear cellophane bags large enough for hamper items?
Yes. The larger OPP sizes run from 12 x 15" (305 x 381mm) up to 18 x 22" (458 x 560mm). They suit bottles of bath products, boxed gift sets and grouped items for a hamper. Pick a size with room to gather and tie the top above the contents.
How do I post gifts in cellophane bags?
A clear bag gives no protection on its own. Slide the bagged gift into a bubble pouch, from BP1 (100 x 135mm) to BP7 (380 x 425mm), then pack it in a small box such as a Crash Lock Box. Fill any gaps so the gift cannot move.
